Diamond Cut Grade

The diamond trade employs certain standards set by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in order to assess a diamond’s quality. This international system measures the 4 key characteristics of a diamond, known as the 4C’s; diamond clarity, diamond color, diamond carat weight and diamond cut. The GIA and most gemologists attest that diamond cut grade is the most complex part of a diamond’s overall 4C’s evaluation.

Most people think that diamond cut refers only to a diamond’s shape, such as a round diamond, pear shaped diamond, emerald cut diamond or marquis cut diamond. Actually, the diamond cut grade refers more to how proportioned the diamond is. The diamond’s proportion has to do with the relationship between the diamond’s size, shape and angle of each of its facets. The beauty of a diamond depends more on its cut than any thing else because how a diamond is cut greatly effects how light interacts with the diamond. It effects the diamond’s brilliance (the brightness created from reflections of white light), fire (the dispersion of light into the colors of the visible spectrum), scintillation (flashes of light or sparkle that occurs when the diamond or light source is shifted), polish (how well each facet is polished) and symmetry (how the facets of the diamond align with each other).

To fairly determine a diamond’s quality and value, diamond cut grade is evaluated by a highly skilled gemologist who assigns higher grades to diamonds with symmetry and proportions that most closely match the benchmarked ideal diamond. The International Diamond Grading System includes ratings of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor.
