Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity is a term used to describe either the presence or absence of flaws inside and on the surface of a diamond. Most diamonds have imperfections, most of which can only be detected by a trained gemologist using a jeweler’s loupe at 10x magnification. Diamonds are always evaluated before they are bought or sold and given a grading report to determine their value. A diamond’s clarity is one of the important characteristics that are evaluated. The other 3 criteria that are taken into consideration are diamond color, diamond carat weight and diamond cut. Together, these are known as the 4 C’s that are used in assessing a diamond’s quality. Once these 4 characteristics are measured, a gemologist can more accurately determine the diamond’s potential market value.

Diamonds are created as the result of carbon being imposed upon by intense heat and pressure deep inside the earth. When diamonds are eventually formed, volcanic eruptions bring them closer to the earth’s surface. As this extreme process occurs in nature, each diamond is essentially born with birthmarks or flaws that contribute to diamond clarity. Flaws that are inside the diamond are referred to as inclusions and a diamond’s surface defects are known as blemishes.

A gemologist evaluates diamond clarity based on the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) International Diamond Grading System. Under high magnification, the number, size, relief, nature and position of the diamond’s blemishes and inclusions are noted. The closer the diamond comes to perfections, the higher its value.
