How to Sell Jewelry to the Right Buyer

There are many reasons you may want to sell jewelry.  Maybe you picked up some expensive jewelry at a garage sale for a very low price or perhaps you have some damaged chains that are worth nothing except the gold value.  There can be a lot of reasons, but finding a reputable buyer can be a real issue.

There are a lot of things to consider when selling your jewelry,  including type of metal (gold or platinum), whether it contains diamonds or gemstones, how old it is and if it's a designer piece such as Tiffany or Cartier.  Maybe it's a piece of antique mourning jewelry from the Victorian period.  Whatever you have to sell, the right buyer is imperative.

Selling Gold or Platinum

Selling precious metals can be a bit complicated.  Gold, platinum and other precious  metal prices are set by futures markets and fluctuate daily like the stock market. It is based on a per ounce price.  It's interesting to note that although platinum is much rarer than gold, the price is often lower. It may be because gold is more popular.

The karat weight of gold refers to the actual amount of pure gold in the item, 24 kt. is 100% gold, 18 kt. is 75%, 14 kt. is 58.5 % and 10 kt. is 41.7% gold.  Old or antique gold may not be marked and will need to be acid tested. Gold is generally purchased by gram weight or per ounce.  There is approximately 28.35 grams in one ounce of gold.  That means if you have a 14 kt. necklace that weighs 10 grams it has 5.85 grams of gold.  The rest is the metal used to harden the gold as gold is very soft.
