Top Antique Jewelry Care Tips

Antique jewelry is often delicate and needs special care. The jewelry can be easily harmed by abrasion, chemicals and even extreme temperatures. Antique jewelry that is in good condition is not easy to come by.  Here are some tips to help you ensure that you can continue to pass your beautiful antique jewelry pieces to the next generation and beyond.

  • Avoid storing your jewelry pieces together as they can scratch against each other and wear away. They’re also likely to tangle, which increases the chances of damage while trying to separate them. A jewelry box with compartments and organization hangers can help  keep the fragile pieces separate. The chain necklaces, bracelets or earrings should be laid out or hang to avoid knots or tangles. Alternatively, you can wrap the pieces in clean tissue and store in a cotton jewelry bag.

  • Put your make-up on before wearing antique jewelry.  This keeps it from coming into direct contact with perfume, oil, hairspray, lotion and so on. These products can cause gradual damage and weaken the jewelry over time.

  • Remove your jewelry before coming into contact with shampoos, soaps, and other chemicals when you are bathing, cleaning, or swimming. Chemicals will weaken and wear away the pieces. Should you find that you forgot to remove it on time, rinse the jewelry with clean water and dry appropriately.

  • Be especially careful when cleaning your antique jewelry.  If you don't know what you are doing, your effort could end up with a broken enamel or faded stone. Basic cleaning can be done with a cotton swab dipped in distilled water. You can also use a soft brush plus a mild cleaning solution. Clean your pieces in a jar or glass bowl, as opposed to the sink to avoid losing anything down the drain.

  • Inspect your jewelry often. Especially if the piece is dropped or had an accident, causing even the smallest damage to the jewelry.  Have them repaired at the slightest sign of a loose stone or shaky joint. Go for a jeweller who is familiar with the intricacies of antique jewelry. An amateur can easily spoil your piece for good.

These tips should help you keep your jewelry in good shape.  Should you decide to sell  some of your pieces in the future, feel free to contact Ralph Mueller & Associates . We will rate your jewelry and make an outright offer. Then hopefully somebody else can have the chance to enjoy the antique piece like you did.
